Ferreirin is a natural product derived from the seeds of the legume, Swartzia rotundifolia. It has potent antibacterial activity and can inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to many antibiotics. Ferreirin also has been shown to have biochanin and ferreirinol as its main active constituents. Ferreirin blocks bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme ribosome. The chemical structure of ferreirin is similar to that of biochanin and ferreirinol, which are phytoalexins found in plants that protect them from infection by pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, or other parasites. The safety profile for ferreirin is not yet established in humans because it has only been tested on animals at this point in time.
