(2E)-3-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)prop-2-enoic acid is an organic compound that is used as a building block in organic synthesis. It can be prepared by the reaction of 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde with propionic acid. This building block is a precursor to many other compounds, including cinnamic acid and anthranilic acid. The synthesis of this compound proceeds through an amide formation with chloroacetic acid followed by uv irradiation. The reaction product has been shown to react with tetrahydrofuran under stereoselective conditions to form a dimerization product.
