Ligupurpuroside A is a novel fatty acid that belongs to the group of verbascosides. It is found in the leaves of Verbascum thapsus L. and has been shown to have potent anti-obesity activity. Ligupurpuroside A inhibits fat accumulation by acting on the enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This inhibition leads to an increase in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, which are both responsible for fat storage. Furthermore, ligupurpuroside A has been shown to inhibit hydrogen bonding with the hepg2 cell membrane, as well as synchronous fluorescence resonance energy transfer from the hepg2 cell membrane. These effects are thought to be responsible for its anti-obesity activity.
