Genistein-5,4'-dimethyl ether is a biologically active flavonoid that has antiviral properties. It is an analog of genistein that has been synthesized by the monomethylation of the 5,4'-dihydroxy group and esterification with methanol. Genistein-5,4'-dimethyl ether is found in echinospartum leaves and propolis from the bee species Apis mellifera. This compound can be used as a natural antiviral agent for the treatment of viral infections such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C. Genistein-5,4'-dimethyl ether has also been reported to have antibiotic and cytotoxic activities against cancer cells.
