Gartanin is a natural substance that has been shown to have antioxidative properties and may be a potential drug target for the treatment of oxidative injury. Gartanin is a flavonoid compound found in plants such as the common garden pea. It has been shown to have anti-cancer properties, which may be due to its ability to induce autophagy in human carcinoma cell lines. Gartanin also appears to activate c-jun phosphorylation and polymerase chain reactions by binding to DNA, inhibiting enzyme activities, and inducing mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Gartanin can also induce pro-apoptotic proteins such as p53, Bax, and Bak.
