3'-Hydroxy-8-O-methylretusin is a flavonoid that is found in the plants Swartzia madagascariensis, Cladrastis lutea, and Dipteryx odorata. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in the treatment of coughs. 3'-Hydroxy-8-O-methylretusin has been found to inhibit topoisomerase activity in vitro. This inhibition leads to DNA damage and cell death by apoptosis. 3'-Hydroxy-8-O-methylretusin also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in human neutrophils, suggesting it could be used as an antiinflammatory agent without causing an inflammatory response.
