It has potent inhibitory activity against the synthesis of insulin and retusin, which are proteins involved in the regulation of glucose. 4-Hydroxyhygrinic acid can also be used as an alternative treatment for diabetes mellitus type 2. The biosynthesis of this metabolite is still unknown, but it is believed to be produced by ipomoea batatas (sweet potato) and other plants in the family Meliaceae.
