Isocryptomerin is a potent antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases. Isocryptomerin binds to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The chemical structure of isocryptomerin is similar to cryptomerin, which is found in plants such as Ginkgo biloba and Ochna integerrima. It has been shown that these homologous compounds have potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus
