4-Hexylthiophene-2-carboxaldehyde is a synthetic additive that is used to produce polymers and as a reagent in organic synthesis. It can be used in magnetic devices, such as sensors and actuators. The reaction of 4-hexylthiophene-2-carboxaldehyde with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene has been shown to form a cyclic compound with a gel permeation chromatography retention time of about 3 minutes. The molecular weight of this compound was determined to be about 230 g/mol by the use of photovoltaic devices. Structural studies have been performed on the molecule using optical spectroscopy and diffraction methods. This process has revealed that the molecule is planar with an acceptor group at one end and a donor group at the other end.
