Jacobine N-oxide is a chemical compound with the molecular formula of C9H8O2N2. It is a yellow crystalline solid that has been found to be toxic in humans. The toxicity of Jacobine N-oxide depends on the dose, which can range from being nontoxic to lethal. At high doses, it causes damage to various organs and tissues. The mechanism of its toxicity is not yet fully understood, but it may be related to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial respiration and alter cell membrane permeability. The administration of Jacobine N-oxide has been shown to inhibit the uptake of retrorsine in liver microsomes from rats and humans. However, this substance cannot be used as an analytical method for detecting retrorsine because it can interfere with other compounds in the sample preparation process.
