Khellactone is a coumarin derivative that has been shown to have cytotoxic properties and inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells in vitro. Khellactone has also been shown to stimulate bone formation by regulating bone matrix proteins, which may be due to its ability to up-regulate signal pathways such as NF-κB, WNT, and MAPKs. The potent induction of chronic cough by khellactone may be due to its inhibition of mitochondrial membrane potential. This compound also inhibits the activity of protein kinase C, which regulates signal pathways such as PKC-δ, PKC-ε, and PKC-βII.
