7,8-Methylenedioxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone (MDI) is a chalcone that is found in the genus Tephrosia. It is used as an antiproliferative agent in cancer studies and has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. MDI has been shown to inhibit cellular proliferation by inducing necrosis factor (TNF) production. MDI binds to DNA and inhibits the synthesis of RNA and protein, leading to cell death. The cytotoxicity of MDI is related to its ability to inhibit the enzyme tyrosine kinase which regulates the proliferation of cells, leading to an increase in TNF levels.
