8-O-Methylretusin is a flavanone derivative found in the genus Cinchona. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cells. 8-O-Methylretusin inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis of human leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer cells. This compound also induces DNA fragmentation and prevents the formation of colonies in human leukemia cells. 8-O-Methylretusin also inhibits the production of cytokines such as IL-2, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) by inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound is an inhibitor of histone deacetylase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the removal of acetyl groups from lysine residues on histones. 8-O-Methylretusin has also been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes COX
