2'-Methoxybiochanin A is an ether that contains a cyclohexane ring. It is a precursor to the naturally occurring luteone, which is found in the plant Cichorium intybus. 2'-Methoxybiochanin A can be synthesized by reacting methyl acetate with trimethyl boron and lithium aluminum hydride. This process produces 2'-methoxybiochanin A as a mixture of two stereoisomers, which is then purified by recrystallization from methanol. The yield for this reaction is about 35%.
The methyl group on the phenyl ring of 2'-methoxybiochanin A can be methylated using dimethyl sulfate and formaldehyde to produce 3-methyl-2'-methoxybiochanin A. This product can be further methylated to 4-methyl-2'-methoxybiochanin A. The yields for
