Meranzin is a coumarin derivative that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bowel disease. Meranzin inhibits the activity of three enzymes, p-hydroxybenzoic acid esterase, lipoxygenase and acetylcholinesterase, which may lead to the therapeutic effects. Meranzin has also been shown to have an antiparasitic effect on roundworms. The biological properties of meranzin are related to its ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and other enzymes that are involved in cellular reactions. Meranzin is found in plants such as Fructus amomi and Locusta migratoria. The compound can be prepared by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
