Microcystin-LR is a water-soluble metabolite of microcystin-RR. It is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis and an inducer of apoptosis in mammalian cells. Microcystin-LR has been shown to inhibit the production of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in human monocytes. Microcystin-LR is a secondary metabolite that is isolated from cyanobacteria, which are also known as blue green algae. This compound can be found in plants, where it functions as a phytochemical. Microcystin-LR has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
