Magnolin is a glycoside derivative isolated from the roots of Angelica Dahurica. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of leukemia cells in vitro and to induce apoptosis in leukemic cells. Magnolin also shows anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to inhibition of c-Jun phosphorylation and suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The structure of magnolin has been determined using X-ray analysis to confirm the presence of a sugar molecule at its core. This sugar molecule is attached to two phenolic moieties that are linked by an ester bond. Magnolin inhibits the activity of enzymes such as protein kinase C, protein kinase A, and cyclooxygenase 2, which are involved in signal pathways associated with cancer and inflammation. This compound also has antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
