Naringin is a flavonol that is found in grapefruit and other citrus fruits. It has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in animal models, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme activities of GSH-PX. Naringin also has an anti-inflammatory effect on macrophages and is able to inhibit the activation of NFκB by inhibiting the expression of growth factor-β1. Naringin has also been shown to induce apoptosis in breast cancer cells through the caspase pathway and can induce cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase. This compound binds with high affinity and specificity to complex enzymes such as protein kinase C (PKC), protein kinase A (PKA), and phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D). Naringin can also inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity, suggesting it may have therapeutic potential for use against infectious diseases.
