Pratensein 7-O-glucoside is a saponin that has been isolated from the roots of Astragalus membranaceus. It is one of the major components of the Chinese herbal medicine Huang Qin, which has been used to treat bronchitis, coughs, and other respiratory disorders in China for centuries. Pratensein 7-O-glucoside exhibits immunomodulatory effects through its ability to inhibit cytokine production by macrophages and lymphocytes. This compound also inhibits prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production and the proliferation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Pratensein 7-O-glucoside binds to a specific region on the enzyme's pharmacophore that is common to all serine proteases. This binding prevents substrate binding and inactivates the enzyme by blocking its catalytic site.
