Pterocarpan is a natural compound that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against oral pathogens. Pterocarpan is a derivative of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which was found in the bark of the East Indian tree, Pterocarpus indicus. The structure of pterocarpan is similar to glycinol, an inhibitor of mitochondrial membrane potential. Pterocarpan inhibits the growth of oral pathogens by preventing the production of ATP and interfering with signal peptide synthesis. The anti-infective activity of pterocarpan has been observed in cell culture studies against Candida glabrata, a yeast that causes infections in immunosuppressed patients.
