Piscidia erythrina, also known as Erythrina erythrina, is a shrub and member of the legume family. The plant contains a chemical called 6'-prenylpiscidone that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. Chemical methods were used to extract 6'-prenylpiscidone from the plant's roots. The chemical was then purified by column chromatography and recrystallization. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that 6'-prenylpiscidone is an oxazole with a molecular weight of 230.5 g/mol. The compound was found to have anti-inflammatory effects against lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β).
