Peuarin is a photoinduced, natural coumarin that has been identified as the major source of coumarins in Arenarium erythraea. Peuarin targets silicon and carbon atoms to form an octahedral complex with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1:1. The compound was first isolated by using laser induced spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy techniques. Structural analysis revealed that peuarin contains two benzene rings and three methoxy groups, which are located at the same positions as those in natural coumarins. This allows for structural comparisons between natural and synthetic coumarins.
Photoinduced peuarin has been shown to have strong anti-oxidant activities due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). It has also been shown to be able to reduce the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in rats with colitis.
