Saponins are a group of triterpenoid saponins that have been isolated from the bark of Quillaja saponaria and other plants. They have a variety of biological functions, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. Saponin is a polymerase chain inhibitor that has been shown to be active against various cancer cells in vitro. It also inhibits the synthesis of urea nitrogen in the liver and plasma, which may be due to its ability to bind to and disrupt the function of RNA polymerase II. Saponins also have been found to inhibit leishmania, which is an intracellular parasite that causes leishmaniasis, by blocking protein synthesis.
