Tinophyllol is an antibiotic that belongs to the class of diterpene esters. It is a mixture of stereoisomers, with four methyl groups on the phenyl ring. Tinophyllol has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, such as Arcangelisia and Berberine. Tinophyllol also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the active site of bacterial ribosomes and interfering with protein synthesis. The affinity of tinophyllol for bacterial ribosomes can be increased by adding diterpenes, such as berberine.
