Usaramine is a drug that has been shown to have hepatoprotective effects against cell death induced by retrorsine, a known hepatotoxin. Usaramine is also a potent inhibitor of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and can be used to study the mechanism of action of EGF. It has been shown to inhibit the metabolic rate in rat liver microsomes and hepatocytes, which may be due to its ability to bind to the catalytic site of enzymes in these cells. Usaramine has also been shown to inhibit the production of n-oxide, which is an important reactive metabolite in hepatic cellular injury.
