Urobilin is a bile pigment that is excreted in the urine and feces, and it can be detected as an indirect marker of biliary tract disease. Urobilin has been detected in wastewater by a number of different analytical methods, including spectrophotometry and HPLC. The presence of urobilin in wastewater may be due to the excretion of urobilin into the sewer system from the digestive tract or to decomposition of hemoglobin. It has also been shown that urobilin can be degraded by bacteria present in the environment. Urobilin is a precursor for other products that are involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis, such as siderophores, which are used by some bacteria to scavenge iron from their environment. The effects of urobilin on bacterial growth have been studied using mercury chloride (HgCl2). Adding HgCl2 to cultures containing urobilin inhibited bacterial growth; this effect was not
