Vaginidin is a protocatechuic acid derivative that has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against melanin biosynthesis. It is synthesised from the furocoumarins, such as psoralen and bergapten, by dehydration. Vaginidin has been shown to be effective in the treatment of skin disorders, such as vitiligo and erytherma. Vaginidin also shows synergistic effects with other medicinal plants like Peucedanum decursivum. The chemical reactions that lead to vaginidin formation have been studied extensively, and it has been found that the conversion of psoralen into vaginidin involves an ether extraction followed by a reaction with an aromatic compound.
