Product Information
Clopidogrel is a thienopyridine prodrug that inhibits the ADP-induced aggregation of platelets. Clopidogrel is metabolized to its active form, clopidogrel sulfide (clopidogrel thiolactone), by esterases present in human serum and liver. The conversion to the active form is dependent on the presence of an intact disulfide bond. Clopidogrel has been shown to be effective in reducing cardiovascular events in patients with atherosclerosis and in those undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions. Clopidogrel also has anti-platelet activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit platelet aggregation induced by ADP or arachidonate. This drug is used as an adjunct for treatment of patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery or percutaneous coronary intervention, or who are at risk for such procedures.
