Xanthohumol D is a flavonoid derivative that is structurally related to prenylflavonoids. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and as such, has been suggested as a potential cancer drug. Xanthohumol D also inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting protein synthesis, which may be due to its structural similarity with other potent COX-2 inhibitors. This compound also has the ability to enhance the effects of chemotherapeutic agents. Xanthohumol D is not very soluble in water and it is only slightly soluble in ethanol. A 1% solution of xanthohumol D in methanol can be prepared by adding 0.1g of xanthohumol D to 100 mL methanol and shaking for 30 minutes at room temperature.
