Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid found in plants and animals. It is an antioxidant that can protect cells against oxidative stress and damage. Zeaxanthin is used to prevent lipid peroxidation, which may be due to its role as a quencher of singlet oxygen. Zeaxanthin also has the ability to pass through cell membranes and act as an antioxidant in the mitochondria. The genotoxic potential of zeaxanthin has been shown using regulatory assays on human lymphocytes, which showed no significant effect on chromosomal integrity. Studies have also shown that zeaxanthin does not induce mutagenicity in vivo or in vitro, nor does it cause chromosome damage.
