Paeonilactone A is a natural product derived from the fungus Ganoderma lucidum. It has potent inhibitory activity against cancer cells and is being studied as a potential therapeutic drug in the treatment of cancer. Paeonilactone A is also an anti-inflammatory agent that has been shown to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Paeonilactone A has been shown to be effective against some tumor types, such as breast cancer cells, but not others, such as melanoma cells. The antitumor effects of paeonilactone A are stereoselective; it inhibits the growth of only one type of tumor cell line in culture at concentrations that cause no toxicity to normal cells. This selective effect may be due to its ability to inhibit a specific enzyme, sodium carbonate dehydratase (NaCD), which is found in higher levels in tumor cells than in normal cells.
