Limonin is a natural compound found in citrus fruits. Limonin is an inhibitor of the mitochondrial membrane potential that has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis in vitro. Limonin has also been shown to have anticancer activity in vivo, as well as antinociceptive properties. Limonin has been shown to inhibit the production of 3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (3EBS) and acetate extract from cancer cells. Limonin also inhibits the development of constrictions in mice, which are caused by histamine release following injury. Limonin also inhibits the activation of caspase-3, a key enzyme involved in apoptosis, through inhibition of protein synthesis and induction of autophagy. Limonin has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for treatment of inflammatory disorders such as arthritis or osteoarthritis.
