Ethyl 3-pyRidylacetate is a chiral compound that is used in asymmetric synthesis. It is formed by the reaction of methides with base catalysts. The nmr spectrum of this compound shows three distinct signals, which correspond to the three possible stereoisomers: enolate, trisubstituted, and nucleophilic. These signals are due to the different methylene groups on the molecule. The active methylene group is responsible for alkylation reactions and carbon disulphide formation.
