Carbodiimides are active in the cleavage of peptide bonds and are used for the synthesis of peptide-based drugs. Diethyl (methylthiomethyl)phosphonate has been shown to inhibit a number of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease. The phosphonates inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes and inhibiting translation. Diethyl (methylthiomethyl)phosphonate also inhibits the activation of caspases, which induces apoptosis in cancer cells.</p>
