α-Bungarotoxin

Description:
α-Bungarotoxin is a potent neurotoxin derived from the venom of the Taiwanese banded krait (Bungarus multicinctus). It is a polypeptide composed of approximately 74 amino acids and is known for its high affinity for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, particularly at the neuromuscular junction. This binding inhibits the action of acetylcholine, leading to paralysis and respiratory failure in affected organisms. The toxin is characterized by its stability under various conditions, including heat and pH variations, which contributes to its effectiveness. α-Bungarotoxin is often used in research to study receptor function and to explore the mechanisms of synaptic transmission. Its specificity for certain receptor subtypes makes it a valuable tool in neurobiology. Additionally, due to its potent effects, it is also of interest in the development of potential therapeutic agents for conditions involving neuromuscular transmission. However, its use requires caution due to its highly toxic nature.
