Description:
Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic primarily used for the treatment of skin infections caused by certain bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). It is derived from the fermentation of the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens. Mupirocin functions by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, which disrupts the incorporation of isoleucine into proteins, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. The substance is typically available in ointment or cream form and is applied directly to the affected area.
