It is a water-soluble, colorless solid with an optimum concentration in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 M. Chelidamic acid hydrate has been used as a proton carrier and was found to be a strong base with a pKb around 12.5 and a high affinity for oxygen atoms, which are present in the form of hydroxyl groups at pH 7, 8, and 9. The compound also has been observed to have cytotoxic effects on prostate cancer cells and human erythrocytes. Chelidamic acid hydrate has shown anticancer activity by causing mitochondrial membrane potential collapse in prostate cancer cells.
