CAS:Controlled ProductDiphenhydramine is a first-generation antihistamine that crosses the blood-brain barrier and blocks the histamine H1 receptor. It has been used in the treatment of allergic reactions and bowel disease. The drug has shown no significant adverse effects in humans at doses up to 100 mg/day. Diphenhydramine is also used as an antiemetic, for motion sickness, and for other indications. It is available over the counter and by prescription. Side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, difficulty urinating, and sleepiness. Diphenhydramine may interact with other drugs such as fructus (fruit) of Elaeagnus angustifolia (Russian olive), which can cause a decrease in blood pressure when taken together with diphenhydramine.
