11-Mercaptoundecylphosphonic acid is a surfactant that is used in a variety of techniques and strategies to study biomolecular interactions. 11-Mercaptoundecylphosphonic acid has been shown to function as an electron donor for the reduction of gold ions, which can be useful for optical detection of proteins. This compound can be modified with fluorine, which enhances its ability to adsorb onto gold nanoparticles. 11-Mercaptoundecylphosphonic acid may also be used as a thermally stable surfactant in photoelectrochemical cells. 11-Mercaptoundecylphosphonic acid will bind to the surface of gold electrodes at pH values below 7 and will not adsorb at pH values above 10.
