:Naltrexone
Description:
Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist primarily used in the management of opioid dependence and alcohol use disorder. It functions by blocking the effects of opioids at the receptor level, thereby reducing cravings and the euphoric effects associated with opioid use. Naltrexone is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and has a molecular formula of C20H23NO4. Its mechanism of action involves competitive inhibition of the mu-opioid receptors, which helps to prevent relapse in individuals recovering from opioid addiction. The substance is typically administered in oral form or via intramuscular injection, with a long half-life that allows for once-daily dosing in oral formulations or less frequent dosing in injectable forms. Side effects may include nausea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue, but it is generally well-tolerated. Due to its opioid-blocking properties, naltrexone is contraindicated in patients currently using opioids, as it can precipitate withdrawal symptoms. Overall, naltrexone plays a significant role in addiction treatment protocols.
