Description:
Loperamide hydrochloride is an opioid receptor agonist primarily used as an antidiarrheal medication. It works by slowing down gut motility, which increases the time substances stay in the intestines, allowing for more water absorption and resulting in firmer stools. The substance is typically administered in its hydrochloride salt form, enhancing its solubility and stability. Loperamide is characterized by its relatively low bioavailability when taken orally, as it undergoes significant first-pass metabolism in the liver.
