:Tetrodotoxin
Description:
Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin primarily found in certain species of pufferfish, as well as in some other marine organisms and terrestrial animals. It is classified as a non-proteinaceous alkaloid and is known for its ability to block voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells, leading to paralysis and potentially fatal respiratory failure. TTX is highly toxic, with a lethal dose being extremely small, making it one of the most toxic substances known. The compound is water-soluble and has a molecular formula of C11H17N3O8, featuring a complex structure that includes a guanidinium group. Tetrodotoxin does not cross the blood-brain barrier, which distinguishes its effects on the peripheral nervous system from those of other neurotoxins. Due to its high toxicity, TTX has been studied for potential medical applications, including pain management and as a tool in neuroscience research. However, its use is heavily regulated due to the risks associated with exposure.
