CAS 451-40-1
:2-Phenylacetophenone
Description:
2-Phenylacetophenone, with the CAS number 451-40-1, is an organic compound classified as a ketone. It features a phenyl group attached to both an acetophenone moiety and a phenyl group, resulting in a structure that includes two aromatic rings. This compound is typically a white to pale yellow solid at room temperature and is known for its characteristic sweet, floral odor. It is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, and ether, but has limited solubility in water. 2-Phenylacetophenone is primarily used as a photoinitiator in polymer chemistry, particularly in UV-curable coatings and inks, due to its ability to absorb UV light and initiate polymerization processes. Additionally, it has applications in the synthesis of various organic compounds and can serve as a flavoring agent in the food industry. Safety considerations include handling it with care, as it may cause skin and eye irritation upon contact. Proper storage in a cool, dry place away from light is recommended to maintain its stability.

CAS:
2-Phenylacetophenone is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic and significantly inhibit the growth of bacteria. 2-Phenylacetophenone binds to fatty acids in the cell membrane and forms covalent linkages with them, leading to the permeabilization of the cell membrane. This leads to bacterial death because without a functional cell membrane, cells cannot maintain homeostasis. The mechanism for this is not fully understood but it is believed that 2-phenylacetophenone binds to toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on macrophages, which triggers an inflammatory response. 2-Phenylacetophenone also reacts with hydroxyl groups on DNA and may interfere with DNA repair mechanisms.
Formula:C14H12OPurity:Min. 95%Color and Shape:Red PowderMolecular weight:196.24 g/mol2-Phenylacetophenone
