Description:
Carbenicillin disodium is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic that is primarily used to treat infections caused by certain Gram-negative bacteria. It is characterized by its ability to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis, which is a crucial mechanism for its antibacterial activity. The disodium salt form enhances its solubility in water, making it suitable for intravenous administration. Carbenicillin is particularly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and some strains of Escherichia coli, among other pathogens. Its chemical structure includes a beta-lactam ring, which is essential for its antibacterial properties, and a carboxyl group that contributes to its spectrum of activity.
