It has been shown to be specific for bacterial nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) reductase and NAD+ kinase enzymes, which are involved in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). 6-Hydroxynicotinic acid binds to these enzymes and prevents them from carrying out their normal reactions, leading to decreased ATP production.
