CAS 50679-08-8: Terfenadine
Description:Terfenadine is an antihistamine that was primarily used to treat allergic conditions such as hay fever and hives. It belongs to the class of second-generation antihistamines, which are designed to minimize sedation compared to first-generation antihistamines. Terfenadine is a selective antagonist of the H1 histamine receptor, effectively blocking the action of histamine, a compound involved in allergic responses. The substance is characterized by its relatively low solubility in water and its lipophilic nature, which allows it to cross cell membranes easily. However, terfenadine has been associated with serious cardiac side effects, particularly when taken in conjunction with certain other medications that inhibit its metabolism, leading to potentially life-threatening arrhythmias. Due to these safety concerns, terfenadine was withdrawn from the market in many countries. Its chemical structure includes a triphenylmethanol moiety, contributing to its pharmacological properties. As a result, terfenadine is no longer widely used, and safer alternatives have since been developed for allergy treatment.
