3,5-Dichlorobenzoic acid is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be active against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This compound inhibits the growth of bacteria by reacting with amino groups on proteins, which prevents the formation of essential cofactors such as ATP. The reaction with chloride ions leads to the formation of chlorinated products that are cytotoxic. 3,5-Dichlorobenzoic acid has also been shown to inhibit the activity of protein phosphatases in rat liver mitochondria and in human erythrocytes. 3,5-Dichlorobenzoic acid is synthesized from 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid followed by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid.
