It has been shown that the thermal expansion of zirconium oxide can be used to monitor the polymerase chain reaction process. Trimethyl phosphate is also a reactive molecule that reacts with crosslinkers in the presence of water to form trimethyl-oxonium ion complexes. This complex undergoes a nucleophilic substitution reaction, which generates an oxonium ion and a phosphate anion. The trimethyl-oxonium ion complex was detected by LC-MS/MS in cancer cells and tissues.
