Description:

Aroclor 1242 is a commercial mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that was produced by Monsanto. It is characterized by its relatively low chlorine content, typically containing about 42% chlorine by weight. Aroclor 1242 is a viscous, oily liquid that is colorless to light yellow in appearance. It is known for its thermal stability, electrical insulating properties, and resistance to chemical degradation, which made it useful in various industrial applications, including as a dielectric fluid in capacitors and transformers. However, due to its environmental persistence and potential health risks, including carcinogenicity and endocrine disruption, Aroclor 1242 and other PCBs have been largely banned or restricted in many countries. The substance is lipophilic, meaning it tends to accumulate in biological tissues, leading to bioaccumulation in the food chain. Its environmental impact and toxicity have made it a subject of extensive regulatory scrutiny and remediation efforts.
