Galactitol

Description:
Galactitol, also known as D-galactitol or dulcitol, is a sugar alcohol derived from galactose. It is a white, crystalline solid that is soluble in water and has a sweet taste, although it is less sweet than sucrose. Galactitol is classified as a polyol, which means it contains multiple hydroxyl (-OH) groups, contributing to its hygroscopic nature. It is commonly used in the food industry as a sugar substitute and in various pharmaceutical applications due to its low caloric content and potential health benefits. In the human body, galactitol can be formed from the reduction of galactose, particularly in individuals with galactosemia, a genetic disorder affecting galactose metabolism. While generally considered safe, excessive accumulation of galactitol can lead to osmotic imbalances and complications. Its chemical formula is C6H14O6, and it has a molecular weight of approximately 182.17 g/mol. Galactitol's properties make it a subject of interest in research related to diabetes and metabolic disorders.

  • Dulcitol

    CAS:

Dulcitol is a sugar alcohol that is used in the food industry and as an alternative to sucrose. Dulcitol can be found in wastewater treatment and has been shown to be an inhibitor of wild-type strains of Escherichia coli and Bacteroides fragilis. It also inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, by inhibiting their ability to synthesize DNA. Dulcitol is metabolized through a number of metabolic transformations, including hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. Dulcitol can also inhibit the activity of certain enzymes such as protein kinase C (PKC).
